After Ilhan Omar made some comments which certain people described as an attempt to “trivialize” the 9/11 attacks, many people jumped to slam her, including other prominent political figures.
On the other hand, some have expressed their support for Omar, claiming that her statement was being taken out of context and intentionally misrepresented.
Among those is Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who has voiced her criticism against
Ocasio-Cortez pointed out that Ilhan Omar is a co-sponsor of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, and has worked hard throughout her life to improve the lives of those who have been affected by the attack.
AOC tweeted: "I’m not going to quote the NY Post’s horrifying, hateful cover. Here’s 1 fact: @IlhanMN is a cosponsor of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund. She‘s done more for 9/11 families than the GOP who won’t even support healthcare for 1st responders – yet are happy to weaponize her faith."
Here is the comment that got Omar in trouble and she appeared to minimize the attacks. The Minnesota congresswoman stated: "CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something, and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties."
Other politicians have also come out in defense of Ilhan Omar, and Ocasio-Cortez was far from the first one to make such a statement.
However, her words, in particular, have been gaining a lot of traction, which could partly be explained by the notoriety surrounding Ocasio-Cortez herself.
It is no secret that a large number of people are continually trying to take things she says out of context.
Omar has not retracted her statement, nor has she shown any intention to do so.
The politician would probably be wise to stand by her words in the near future, as they have managed to bring a lot of attention to her platform.
Whether that is good or bad is hard to tell, but in the end, any good politician should be able to take the spotlight and transform it into something that benefits their career.
Was AOC right or wrong in her defense of Omar?
