At least 17 people have been killed and scores reported missing in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh after heavy rains, authorities said on Saturday.

The province has been hit by severe floods since Thursday, causing severe flooding in at least five districts.

The death toll rose to 17 on Friday night after three people were killed when a building collapsed, police said. Ten people trapped in the rubble have been rescued but two have not been found.

Earlier on Friday, at least 12 people were killed when floods swept away the bus they were traveling in. Efforts are underway on Saturday to track down missing passengers.

In recent days there have been reports of fatalities in various districts as officials have warned of an increase in numbers as rescue operations continue.

National Disaster Relief Force teams were deployed in the worst-hit and most vulnerable areas, and local authorities rescued and evacuated hundreds of families to shelters.

In the Kadapa region, one of the worst and most frequent rains and floods forced officials to close the local airport until Thursday. Officials said breaking into dams and tanks had caused further flooding, leaving hundreds of villages attacked and many residents trapped in their homes.

Rainfall in southern India at this time is unusual although the country has seen heavy rainfall this year as experts warn that climate change exacerbates the problem by making it rain heavily and frequently.

Last week, the neighboring Tamil Nadu region was hit by floods and at least 28 people south of Kerala were killed as heavy rains caused landslides last month.
