The former reality TV star made headlines and excited his base by boasting that there is a possibility he might order as many as 15,000 active-duty troops to support Border Patrol agents.
The agents are attempting to stop the caravans of migrants traveling from El Salvador to Mexico in the hope of crossing to the United States.
Obama gave a fiery speech in Florida where he bashed Trump and the members of the GOP for using political stunts to win the midterms.
While at the rally in support of Democratic candidates Andrew Gillum and Bill Nelson, Obama also blamed Trump for the racial, social, and religious tensions that have emerged in the recent months.
Obama said: “I’m assuming people must get upset when they see folks that spend all of their time vilifying others, questioning their patriotism, calling them ‘enemies of the people,’ and then suddenly pretending they’re concerned about civility. And we don’t need more elected officials who say ‘oh, well, I’m very concerned,’ or ‘I’m terribly vexed by this bad behavior, but there’s nothing I can do about it.” We need leaders that stand up for what’s right, regardless of party.”
It did not take the Republican politician very long to hit back. Trump at a fiery campaign rally in West Virginia responded by: "Anybody was worse to the press than Obama. Nobody. In fact, he even used, as I remember, the Justice Department to go after reporters. Remember? Remember? But he’s talking about how I should be nice to the fake news. No thank you.”
The businessman went on to mock his predecessor by saying he watched Obama's speech because he was more or less bored.
Trump told his adoring fans and supporters: “I heard President Obama speak today. I had to listen; I was on the plane, I had nothing else to do. He had a very small crowd. They don’t tell you that.”
At the political event, Trump also changed his tune after initially saying the troops should shoot the migrants.
Trump walked back his words by claiming: "I didn't say shoot. I didn't say shoot! But they do that with us; they're going to be arrested for a long time."
Do you agree with Trump's views of the situation at the border?
