Brazilian music star Marília Mendonça dies in a plane crash

Marília Mendonça, a Brazilian music star who has drawn millions of women to the national anthem of men's style, died Friday in a plane crash, confirms the official of her recording label.

Mendenca was 26 years old.

"Sure, it's a big disaster," said Marcelo Soares, CEO of the record label Som Libre via email. "Marília was an amazing person and a unique artist."

A statement posted on Mendonça's Twitter account confirmed the deaths of four other people on the plane, including his music director, Henrique Ribeiro; his uncle and mentor, Abicieli Silveira Dias Filho; and the pilot and his co-pilot, who were not named.

Civil police in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, said the plane crashed in the Caratinga area, located in the northern municipality of Rio de Janeiro.

Mendonça was on his way from Goiânia to Cararatinga, where he was due to perform Friday night, a Twitter statement said.

Earlier on Friday, Mendonça posted a video on social media showing him walking, carrying a suitcase, towards a two-engine aircraft.

Mendonça, often referred to as one of Brazil's leading music stars, was a sertanejo country style sound critic, so much so that he helped promote a related genre called feminejo.

In 2019, he won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Sertaneja Music Album. His YouTube page has approximately 14 billion views.

On Thursday, Mendonça's Netflix music trailer announced the upcoming drama series, "Só se for por amor [Only if it's romantic]," featuring dozens of emerging sertanejo artists.

In a tweet, Brazilian television star, singer and lawyer Juliette Freire expressed grief over the loss of Mendonça, calling her a Brazilian icon.

Mendonça is survived by his one-year-old son, reports Billboard.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated.
