When it was announced in April that pop singer Britney Spears was checking into a mental health facility, fans poured out both their love and their support. She had reportedly checked in to the center voluntarily for 30 days, in an attempt to help her better cope with the news of her father's serious health issues.
However, in the past week that love and support have taken a totally different form as a campaign known as #FreeBritney has been gaining rapid steam. The hashtag movement came about after an anonymous individual, claiming to be a paralegal, made a call into the Britney’s Gram podcast.
During that call, the individual claimed that Britney had actually been a resident of the mental health center since mid-January, not April as initially reported. What made the announcement all the more upsetting and disturbing is that the individual also claimed that the singer was not there by choice, but against her will.
The alleged paralegal made the claim that they had worked on Britney's conservatorship, stating that Jamie, Britney's father, and overseer as her legal conservator, mentioned noticing that it appeared that the singer was not taking her medication as it had been prescribed. As a result, Jamie threatened to cancel Britney's Domination residency in Las Vegas, sending her to a mental health institution instead.
When Britney allegedly continued to refrain from taking her prescribed medicine, Jamie did indeed pull the plug on Las Vegas, instructing Britney to blame the reason on her illness. That is what she did on January 4th, in an emotional post on her Instagram.
A voicemail provided by the anonymous individual stated that “Britney has been in the mental facility since mid-January. There is no end date particularly in sight for this stay at this mental facility to end. She did not want to go.”
In the meantime, reports indicated that Britney's mother, Lynne, has been somewhat fanning the flames of the #Free Britney theory, by liking comments about it on her daughters Instagram page.
Comments that stated that the fans hoped that Lynn was indeed supporting Britney in trying to end the conservatorship and, thusly, the hold Jamie has over the singer's life. Going on to state that they also hoped that Lynne was not letting her ex-husband keep Britney somewhere against her will.
As for Lynne herself, she has gone so far as to post a cryptic Instagram message on Tuesday that stated: "When God's warriors go down on their knees, the battle is not over; it has just begun."
So, what’s the verdict—you decide.
Is Britney Spears indeed being held in a mental health facility against her will?
