GM launches electric vehicle Chevy Silverado to rivals Ford F-150 Lightning

"The fastest growing part we see is the consideration of an EV truck full size," Chevy said.

If General Motors is “on the road to the future of all electricity,” as CEO Mary Barra often points out, the new Chevrolet Silverado EV will raise heavy issues along the way.

Barra helped pull the covers off the entire electric pickup during his keynote address at the CES technology show in Las Vegas on Wednesday, boasting that it would match the power and performance of the standard image - while traveling a distance of 400 miles. Launched in production early next year, it will be the second GM battery-powered van and one of at least 30 electric models set to reach the market by 2025.

"The fastest growing segment we see being processed by the EV is the size of full-size trucks," Steve Majoros, Chevy's chief marketing officer, told NBC News.

Ford has included approximately 200,000 pre-bookings with its F-150 Lightning electric car, while Tesla claims it has more than 400,000 deposits with Cybertruck often delayed. In total, 10 or more battery pickups could be sold over a decade, including the Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra models, as well as the new Rivian R1T and others.

GM's first electric van, the GMC Hummer EV, went on sale late last year, for a sticker price of $ 112,595.

Both trucks share the same “skateboard” as the “building,” placing motors, batteries, and other parts of the drivetrain under load. The design lowers the car's gravitational center to stabilize it, especially at high speeds. It also means that the space normally occupied by the engine room can also be used for passengers and cargo.

With the Silverado EV, there is a large "frunk" under the hood and a cabinet with a business class room.

By switching to a battery drivetrain, the truck may be more environmentally friendly - but the Chevy have not forgotten regular bakkie buyers. Initially, two versions of the Silverado EV will be produced: the WT, or work truck, will be thrown to ship customers and buyers; and RST First Edition will guide those looking for more luxurious features over drag and load.

Initially, the RST will tow a trailer of up to 10,000 pounds and 1,300 pounds of freight. WT will release a limit of 8,000 pounds of trailer and a payload of 1,200 pounds. The latest versions, according to Chevy, will carry a trailer of up to 20,000 pounds.

The RST includes a 200-kilowatt-hour battery pack, one of the largest in the industry, producing up to 400 miles per charge - although that will vary, depending on the trailer and cargo.

Using one of the world's fastest public chargers, Chevy said the Silverado EV would be able to cover 100 miles in just 10 minutes, though reaching 80 percent - the average size of a fast charger - would take about an hour.

On the surface, the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV may not look so different from a regular truck. But they do not share a single body panel. The battery model has spent a lot of time in the air tunnel, aerodynamics that are important for EV range and performance.

Although the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV is almost identical to a standard truck, they do not share a single body panel.

The look reveals a shorter nose and more structured features. The standard grille is no longer available, though a small amount of air absorbs feed to cool the ground battery pack and humidity. When you see an EV coming out of your rear view mirror you may notice different headlights connected to the illuminated bar and the Chevy bowtie illuminated sign.

Inside, the width of the cabinet is easily visible. Chevy designers have opted for a more sophisticated look, with a 17-inch infotainment touch screen.

The WT model will be the first in production, starting in the spring of 2023, and will have a sticker price of just under $ 40,000. The RST First Edition follows in the fall of 2023, and will start at $ 105,000.

Customers can place reservations immediately on their website, Chevy said Wednesday.
