Cuban-born Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday delivered a clear message to the Cuban and Haitian people amid upheaval in each Caribbean country: Do now not come to the USA.

“The time is in no way proper to strive migration by sea,” Mayorkas said in a press conference on the U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters. “To folks that risk their lives doing so, this risk is not really worth taking.”

“Allow me to be clear: If you take to the ocean, you'll now not come to the US.”

Mayorkas’ message comes amid continued protests in Cuba calling for the end of the sixty two-12 months-antique dictatorship and the current assassination of the president of Haiti.

The Biden management has expressed cohesion with the thousands of Cubans protesting at the communist-run island, however, thus far have now not shared any concrete plans or coverage to assist them. Many migrants trying to attain the US by sea have died on the dangerous trek over the years. In recent weeks, 20 migrants have died at sea, Mayorkas stated.

So far, the U.S. Has not seen a surge in Cuban or Haitian migrants by way of the sea, Mayorkas said. But the U.S. Coast Guard has deployed officers to screen the situation by using air and sea in the Florida Straits and the Caribbean Sea, he stated.

“Any migrant intercepted at sea, irrespective of their nationality, will no longer be authorized to enter the USA,” Mayorkas stated.

In economic 2021, 470 Cubans and 313 Haitians were intercepted at sea, as compared to 49 Cubans and 430 Haitians in economic 2020, Mayorkas said.
