Cartel shooters in northern Mexico have killed on Monday at least nine US citizens, members of a prominent Mormon family, LeBaron, according to relatives and local authorities.

Mexico security officials confirmed the deaths of three mothers and their young children, highlighting that six more kids were wounded in the attack. Five of them were already transported to hospitals in Phoenix, Ariz. The media previously reported for a missing little girl, but relatives confirmed they found her.

Monday's slaughter happened near Rancho La Mora, on the border between Sonora and Chihuahua, in a remote area in the mountains. The region is notorious for turf wars between drug cartels, officials said.

The mothers left their community at the same time in three separate cars. Some of them were driving to a wedding in a neighboring Mormon community. The rest of the family were traveling back to the United States, according to the relatives.

Suddenly, shooters opened fire. Witnesses claimed there were so many rounds that one of the cars exploded in flames.

According to the family members and the Mormon community, it was a case of mistaken identity by drug cartel shooters. Mexican authorities have not confirmed yet of a motive.

President Trump also commented on the tragedy in Tweeter suggesting to send US troops to Mexico to help the country ''wipe off'' drug cartels forever.

Later Tuesday, Utah Sen. Mike Lee (R) confirmed that Washington is still investigating the case to find out whether the family was singled out or they happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said his country would not need foreign intervention to deal with such cases. He emphasized he was ready to cooperate with the US authorities to investigate the issue, provided Mexico's independence is respected.

Lopez Obrador also rejected Trump's call for a war with the cartels stating that politics was invented to avoid armed conflict as it is irrational and the worst thing we can see.

All victims and survivors belong to the prominent Mormon family LeBaron that is settled in Mexico but has dual US/Mexican citizenship and remains well connected with relatives in the United States. Mormons of Germanic origin broke away from the Mormon church when it abandoned polygamous marriages.

What do you think? Do you agree or disagree with President Trump's proposal to send US troops to Mexico and destroy the drug cartels?
