Pete Buttigieg delighted many Democrats and a small group of Republicans by announcing what they have been waiting for -- he is running for president.

Mr. Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana; revealed his plans to seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 in his hometown after making a coveted appearance on Ellen DeGeneres' television show.

Buttigieg, who has been making headlines in the past weeks for slamming Vice President Mike Pence for his stance against the LGBT community, said he is working for "a new American spring."

He told the audience: "You and I have the chance to usher in a new American spring. So with hope in our hearts and with fire in our bellies, let’s get to work and let’s make history."

The 37-year-old politician went on to explain why he is throwing his hat in the race and hopefully make Donald Trump a one-term president: "My name is Pete Buttigieg. They call me Mayor Pete. I am a proud son of South Bend, Indiana, and I am running for president of the United States. I am standing here today with other mayors because we know something that this country needs to know, and we are in a unique position to know it. We can answer the question that many in America are asking. Yes, America, Mayor Pete is really that special."

He did not miss the opportunity to attack Mr. Trump in his remarks. The Democrat stated: "I'm here today to tell a different story than 'Make America Great Again,' I do believe in American greatness. I believe in American values."

He concluded by: "But we live in a moment that compels us each to act. The forces changing our country today are tectonic. ... This time is not just about winning an election. It’s about winning an era."

Buttigieg, an Afghanistan veteran, if he beats Trump, could make history as the youngest and first-openly gay president.

Buttigieg's energetic and uplifting presidential declaration that featured many hopeful stories about America drew a comparison to former President Barack Obama.

The mayor's roaring speech declaring his candidacy helped him raised a whopping $1 million in less than 24 hours.

Do you think Buttigieg can beat Trump, yes or no?
