The public has widely criticized the relationship between R. Kelly and the late singer Aaliyah over the years.
The fact that Aaliyah was only 15 when she married the "I Believe I Can Fly" singer raised many eyebrows, although, in retrospect, it was just another element of a larger behavioral pattern.
However, it looks like there might have been more to the situation between the two than the public was aware of.
According to a report by someone who was allegedly close to R. Kelly -- an ex-girlfriend of his, in fact, Lisa Van Allen -- the R&B artist got Aaliyah pregnant, and that was his primary motivation for wanting to marry her.
Allen explained: "He told me that they were married, that she was pregnant, that he did doctor up the marriage certificate. So she could say she was 18, so they could get married, and the reason was if he thought that she was 18 then he couldn't get charged if someone found out she was pregnant."
The former girlfriend added: "And this came out of his mouth, I could take a lie detector test to this, this is what he told me. Specifically told me. It's not a rumor, its the truth. Honestly, I am not really sure the age, but I definitely know she was 15 when they got married."
The marriage was only intended to protect the reputation of the Chicago crooner, as it was dissolved after Aaliyah had aborted her child.
The whole logic behind the situation was driven by R. Kelly’s fear that he might face serious repercussions if the pregnancy had come to light.
That is supposedly why he insisted on marrying Aaliyah, forging the certificates to claim that she was 18, and then divorce her once the situation had blown over.
The truth will likely never come to light after Aaliyah’s tragic death. For that reason, some have also been critical towards Kelly’s former girlfriend for bringing attention to this now.
According to some, it is disrespectful to discuss incidents involving someone who has no opportunity to get a word in, especially events that paint them in such a negative light.
As can be expected, Kelly himself has not made any comments on the situation.
Do you think Allen's story is right or wrong?
