Ever since the release of the latest Sandra Bullock movie, The Bird Box, on Netflix last month, there have been videos all over the internet of individuals participating in what are called “Bird Box Challenges”. Most of these challenges are pretty simple, and really quite safe, however, some individuals are taking the challenge a little too far.
One such challenge occurred this past week in the state of Utah. A 17-year-old female decided to take the challenge to the next level—while driving. Covering her eyes with her beanie, the teenager proceeded to drive into oncoming traffic, essentially blind. She then proceeded to drive her grey colored pickup truck into a SUV before coming to a halt, crashing into a lamp post.
According to reports from law enforcement officials it was definitely a case of life imitating art. The teen was inexcusably attempting something that was not only dangerous to her but to her fellow drivers as well. While attempting the challenge blinded by her beanie she did indeed lose control of her vehicle, causing her to skid into another lane on the Layton Parkway.
Many people are remembering the last challenge that left most speechless and shaking their heads during the videos showing the Tide Pod challenges earlier last year. But as many have seen, the “Bird Box Challenge” is one that can not only hurt those performing the challenge itself but those innocent bystanders around them as well.
Netflix, the online streaming service that produced and presented the movie the challenges are based on posted on their twitter account right after the new year:
“Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THE BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”
The driver of the pickup truck, her fellow passenger, and passengers in the SUV reported that thankfully no one was harmed. When first asked how the crash happened, the teenager stated her friend distracted her, causing her to momentarily lose control of her vehicle. However, after further interviews, she admitted the crash was caused by her attempt at the “Bird Box Challenge.”
Will people continue to play out this challenge regardless of the consequences?
