Sarah Weddington, a 26-year-old Texas attorney who successfully challenged the landmark case of abortion rights Roe v. He was arraigned before the U.S. Supreme Court on Sunday. He was 76 years old.

Susan Hays, a former Weddington student and colleague, said she died asleep Sunday morning at her Austin home. Weddington had been in poor health for a long time and it was unclear what caused his death, Hays told the Associated Press.

Growing up as a minister's daughter in the West Texas city of Abilene, Weddington attended law school at the University of Texas. A few years after graduation, she and her classmate, Linda Coffee, filed a lawsuit against a pregnant woman against a state law that severely restricted abortion.

The case of “Jane Roe,” whose real name was Norma McCorvey, was brought to the attention of Dallas County Attorney Henry Wade and eventually to the Supreme Court.

Weddington filed a lawsuit twice before the Supreme Court, in December 1971 and October 1972, which resulted in a 7-2 ruling that legalized abortions nationwide.

Weddington's death comes as the Supreme Court is considering a case of Mississippi's abortion ban after 15 weeks of pregnancy that is widely considered to be the biggest challenge in recent years in Roe's decision.

While the case was in court, Weddington again ran to represent Austin at the Texas House of Representatives. She was elected in 1972 and served three times as state attorney, before becoming US Counselor in the field of agriculture and later as a women's adviser to President Jimmy Carter.

Weddington later wrote a book about Roe v. Wade, gave lectures and taught lectures at the University of Texas at Austin and Texas Woman's University on leadership, law and sexism. He remained politically and legally active until his later years, attending the 2019 New York regional law signing ceremony aimed at protecting abortion rights in the event of Roe v. Wade was demolished.
