At least three police officers from several police departments were shot dead during a drive in Georgia on Monday morning that left one suspect dead and another in custody, authorities said.

George State Patrol police stopped a Nissan passenger around 3.30am after he parked an 111 mph car at Interstate 20 in Carroll County, Captain Brandon Dawson of the Georgia State Patrol said on Monday. The driver and passenger initially stopped, but walked away as the officer approached the car, Dawson said.

While the state police were following the suspects, a passenger in the car opened fire and hit the guard, paralyzing him, Dawson said.

After being reported by state troops, Carrollton police joined the car, said Carrollton police chief Joel Richards. On one occasion, a passenger fired into a patrol car, struck a police officer who lost control, and crashed into a relief post, Richards said.

Villa Rice police were chasing the suspects on a sidewalk, said Villa Rica police chief Michael Mansour. He turned his shotgun on himself when apprehended by a police officer on the porch of the house where the shootings took place, Mansour said.

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office was also shot in the arm, Sheriff Terry Langley said.

The names of the suspects were not immediately available, but authorities identified the three injured officers as Jay Rapetto of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office; Rob Holloway of Carrollton Police Department; and Chase Gordy of the Villa Rica Police Department.

Authorities say all the injured officers were taken to hospital with injuries. It is not yet clear how serious their injuries are and what their condition is.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Monday morning it was called to investigate the shooting. At 8:30 a.m. Authorities said there was no threat to the public.
