It has admittedly been a less than banner first term when it comes to Trump's choices for official positions within his administration. With that being said, it would seem now Trump has reportedly stated that former secretary of state Rex Tillerson is “incompetent.”
The statement came on the hills of Tillerson telling the House Foreign Affairs Committee that Trump was out-prepared by Russian President Vladimir Putin when they first met in Germany. And so begins the back and forth he said she said style of argument that we have seen with many politicians in the past—with a little Twitter added in for good measure.
Trump not only stated that Tillerson was incompetent, he added that he was also "dumb as a rock." He said that Tillerson was ill prepared as well as ill-equipped to hold the position of Secretary of State. It would seem in the POTUS opinion, Tillerson made up the story that Trump was out-prepared by Putin during their meeting in Hamburg, which led to Tillerson being fired from his post.
There are those that feel that if Tillerson were indeed ill-prepared and ill-equipped to hold the nation's top diplomatic position, then that would lay blame at Trump's doorstep. Trump himself appointed Tillerson, the former CEO of ExxonMobil, after interviewing several candidates, one of which included Senator Mitt Romney.
Shortly after Trump's inauguration, Tillerson was confirmed by the Senate in eight short days, and Trump appointed him to Secretary of State. Trump even tweeted in December 2016 about his choice in Tillerson, heralding the man's abilities as well. One such tweet stated: "Whether I choose him or not for "State," Rex Tillerson, the Chairman & CEO of ExxonMobil, is a world-class player and dealmaker."
Tillerson held his appointed position for 14 months, with most of those months being fraught. After several reports indicated that Tillerson had called Trump “a moron,” he issued a public statement that in turn complimented the president. It was also reported that Tillerson stated in an interview that he had never wanted the position of Secretary of State and had never actively sought the post.
When the interviewer went on to ask why Tillerson accepted the position if he never wanted it, he stated: “My wife told me I’m supposed to do this.”
There is also a tweet from December in which Trump called Tillerson “dumb as a rock and lazy as hell.”
So, what’s the verdict—you decide.
Is there really a need to resort to name calling in such presidential situations
