It happened in Royal Palm Beach, 130 kilometers north of the central city of Florida.

A woman, a man, and a child were killed in a shooting inside a Publix supermarket in Royal Palms, in West Palm Beach County, South Florida.

The detectives investigating the case indicated that among the deceased is the aggressor -although they did not determine if it was the man or the woman-, and that the murdered minor was a child under three years old.

Investigators are still analyzing security camera footage and speaking with witnesses to determine what happened. At the moment, what has transpired is that the victims and the aggressor knew each other.

According to the local press statements by dozens of people inside the supermarket, one of the market employees shouted "shooting," and they all started running. Minutes later, a series of shots were heard. According to area workers, about 50 people ran out of the supermarket in less than half a minute after the shots were heard.

Market employees and customers have spent the day giving statements to the authorities. Royal Palm is a tranquil little town where an incident of violence of this type was generated for the first time.

While there have been several violent gun incidents in South Florida in recent weeks, this is the first time there has been a shooting inside a Publix supermarket. The chain is the most popular in the state, with more than 1,200 stores throughout the country's southeast. The employees are collaborating with the authorities.

"Our thoughts are with those impacted by this tragedy (...) We will work with law enforcement officials to clarify what happened," said Maria Brous, spokeswoman for supermarkets, in a statement distributed to the press.

"It seems that we are anesthetized in the face of gun violence. Today we mourn the loss of these lives and pray for those inside the Publix supermarket who witnessed this tragedy, as well as the police officers who are running into danger to protect the public. Tomorrow we should start having an honest conversation about what happened and what we can do to prevent this type of violence. Inaction is not an option, "said West Palm Beach Commissioner Melissa McKinlay, who came to the supermarket to see first-hand what was happening.

According to the latest census, Royal Palm Beach is a municipality of fewer than 40,000 residents, which is 15 miles west of the city of West Palm Beach.

This year, gun-related homicides have risen across the country. More than 19,000 people have been killed by firearms since January, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

In addition, some 260 people have been victims of mass shootings, defined as incidents in which four or more people are killed or injured.

The United States has a long and painful history of gun violence, with an endless number of daily shootings and mass killings that have targeted schools, workplaces, and shopping centers.
