A local story can go national very quickly these days, thanks to the rise of social media. Religion is once more at the center of a very heated conversation.

An incident in Utah involving religious beliefs has resulted in the administrative suspension of a teacher.

According to reports, the teacher had forced a Catholic student to wash off a religious symbol from his forehead, sparking a wave of outrage in the local community.

The teacher reportedly referred to the marking as inappropriate and forced the student to wash it off with a wet wipe.

The child initially said no and tried to stand his ground, but that proved futile as the teacher refused to back down and forced him to go through with the deed.

Afterward, the boy reportedly showed up at the school’s psychologist office in a state of visible distress.

Karen Fisher, the grandmother of nine-year-old William McLeod, revealed: "He went to see the school’s psychologist crying. He was embarrassed."

An investigation has been launched into the incident and the general behavior of the teacher.

Many have commented negatively on the situation, claiming that incidents like this one should have no place in a school.

It is not clear what repercussions she might face for her actions at this point.

The suspension she has been handed down is only a temporary one, pending the investigation into the incident.

It is not unlikely that the teacher may be relieved of her position if the pressure continues to mount.

Davis School District spokesman Chris Williams shared: "The actions were unacceptable. No student should ever be asked or required to remove an ash cross from his or her forehead."

There has already been a lot of attention towards the incident from multiple sides, not just the local community.

It is clear that many people are willing to pursue this as far as they could and are not going to back down.

The teacher has refused to comment any further on the situation, despite multiple requests from the public and media.
